Description

Water is the most precious resource on the earth which is essential for the existence of life. The scarcity of water affects the environmental and developmental activities of an area. Water harvesting structure is one of the important components of watershed management to conserve these resources. But these structures have to be located at right place where water is available in excess and conditions are favourable for enhanced infiltration to get its maximum benefits. The objective of this study is to identify suitable sites for water harvesting structures using GIS techniques and the IMSD guidelines put forward by NRSA is being followed, for locating the suitable sites. ArcGIS is used for the spatial analysis and the sites are located by weighted overlay techniques in ArcGIS. In this method various thematic maps such as Land use map, geomorphology map, soil map, slope map, stream order map etc. are overlaid to get the suitable locations. Each theme was assigned a weightage depending on its influence on ground water recharge and suitable sites, suitable structures can be identified. However, for the practical implementation of these structures, viability of other considerations such as economy, social implications, practical feasibility etc. need to be considered.
