Description

Disposal of waste is the major issue we are facing nowadays. It is important to dispose the waste in proper manner because a lot of problems are arising due to improper disposal of waste such as pollution in air, water and soil, spreading of disease from insect breeding etc. The generation of municipal solid waste increases with increase in economic growth and rapid urbanization. Though the minimization of waste is impossible so the only choice we have is to dispose the waste properly. In order to dispose the waste in a proper manner constructing the landfill is the best method. It is a facility designed and operated as a basic sanitation project that has sufficiently safe elements to control. Sanitary landfills are site where the waste is contained by a liner system. The primary purpose of the liner system is to isolate the landfill contents from the environment and, therefore, to protect the soil and ground water from pollution originating in the landfill. In this project we designed, suitable landfill at kuthuparamba municipality. We also conduct experimental investigation to improve the permeability characteristics of the local soil by adding different percentage of bentonite (10%, 20%, 30% and 40%) and tested. From this, we attained the least permeable value for 40% bentonite amended mix (9.32 × 10ˉ⁷ cm/s) which is suitable for making the liner for landfill. Design of landfill is done by with respect to test results and with the help of Municipal Solid Waste Management Manual Part 2, 2016 Government Of India.
