Description

A receptionist is a person who works in an office, store or hotel, to help visitors with their needs by interacting with them. The aim of this project is to design and develop a smart receptionist robot that performs the work of a receptionist in an automatic manner. Precisely, the goal of this project is to investigate how robots used as direction-giving systems.

The proposed system focuses on a specific application scenario that can be referred to as “robotic reception”, in which a robot can be used to assist people by giving directions by voice and help them find places of interest and also provide welcome beverages for visitors. This system detects the people using webcam & face detection algorithm. Once it detects human face, it automatically welcomes the visitors through audio output and using arm pointing gestures. Refreshments will be provided if customer needs it. Visitors can press push buttons that correspond to the location they need to go to. The major components of this project are Raspberry Pi, webcam, servomotor, loudspeaker, switches, infrared sensor and an ATmega328 microcontroller. We are using Raspbian operating system for programming and for running the robot. An emergency stop button is also provided.

The proposed system is suitable for offices, showrooms, colleges where it can function as a receptionist. Upon implementation, the system detects human faces and provides welcome messages. The hand movement is also controlled via a servomotor. It also provided a welcome drink while pushing the button. The proposed system has been implemented, successfully tested and has proven to be consistent with its objectives. The future scope of the system is to identify humans using an appropriate algorithm and provide their service to them. It also features a touchscreen display with an attractive GUI.
