Description

The Valapatanam River rises South of Ammatti village in the district of Coorg in Karnataka
State at 750° 52’ East longitude and 120° 13’ North latitude at an elevation of 900m above
MSL. The river has a total length of 101 km from its source to its outfall into the Arabian
Sea. The surroundings of the Valapattanam river is industry, residences etc. The importance
of this study lies in the fact that there has been an increasing concern on the contamination of
valapattanam river due to industrial and anthropogenic activities. Hence, a detailed hydro
chemical study of the estuary has been undertaken around 5 stations of valapattanam river. A
Total of 5 surface water samples will collect for the analysis. The qualitative as well as
quantitative study of some important physicochemical parameters such as pH, Alkainity,
Acidity, Hardness, Chloride , Turbidity,TS,COD, DO and BOD will analyze. After analyzing
the results, are to be compared with standards prescribed by WHO. Water quality index
ranges from 16.66 to 1091.28ppm, which is under the category of excellent to Unsuitable.
Input of various industrial discharge into the water body is responsible for the intense
pollution of the water and must be regarded as a major concern.
