The Department of Civil Engineering at St. Thomas College of Engineering & Technology organized the inauguration of the IGS STM Student Chapter on February 11 at Seminar Hall 1. The event featured Dr. Vandana Sreedharan, Honorary Secretary of IGS Calicut Chapter and HoD of Civil Engineering at GCEK, as the chief guest. The program marked the beginning of student-led activities under the Indian Geotechnical Society, aiming to foster interest and innovation in the field of geotechnical engineering.

The Department of Civil Engineering at St. Thomas College of Engineering & Technology hosted an exciting and engaging event titled "Sticks of Strength – The Ultimate Bridge Challenge" on January 24 at Seminar Hall 1. The competition offered students a hands-on opportunity to apply engineering concepts in designing and constructing model bridges using sticks. The event aimed to foster creativity, structural analysis skills, and teamwork among participants. 

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at St. Thomas College of Engineering & Technology conducted a two-day In-House NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) Workshop on January 20–21 at Seminar Hall 1. The workshop was led by industry professionals Mr. Hari Krishnan M (QA/QC Engineer), Mr. Shins Joseph, and Mr. Arun M R (NDT Technicians). The program aimed to provide hands-on exposure and technical insight into NDT techniques widely used in the inspection and quality control processes in engineering. The event was organized in association with ARMS-STM, IEDC-STM, and the Sattva Civil Engineering Association.

The Department of Civil Engineering, St. Thomas College of Engineering & Technology, organized an expert talk in association with KSCSTE-NATPAC and SATTVA, focusing on "Warm Mix Asphalt – A Step to Sustainability" and "Pavement Design and Evaluation: A Comprehensive Approach to Optimizing Highway Performance." The session featured Dr. Goutham Sarang and Mr. Shijith P P, Scientists from NATPAC, who shared valuable insights into sustainable road construction and performance-based pavement design. The event, held on 31st December 2024, aimed to enhance the knowledge of Civil Engineering students in modern transportation practices.

The Workshop on Total Station provided participants with practical exposure to advanced surveying techniques using Total Station equipment. Designed to enhance field competency, the session focused on instrument handling, data collection, and interpretation methods essential for precise land surveying. The workshop aimed to bridge academic knowledge with industry-relevant practices, thereby equipping students with skills vital for professional success in civil engineering.

The Department of Civil Engineering at St. Thomas College of Engineering & Technology, Mattanur, organized the inauguration of an add-on course in Professional Readiness Level 2 on 10th September 2024 at Seminar Hall 1. The session was graced by Mr. Pranam K T, Assistant Engineer, Mattannur Municipality (Engineering Wing), who served as the resource person. This initiative aims to equip students with the essential skills and awareness required for professional environments and civil service roles. The program was coordinated by Ms. Vijila Balakrishnan (HOD, CE) and Ms. Athira B Krishnan (Asst. Prof., CE) under the Civil Engineering Association SATTVA.

The AutoCAD Workshop is aimed at equipping students and professionals with the fundamental skills required for computer-aided drafting. The program covers the basics of 2D drafting, drawing tools, dimensioning, and layout techniques. Participants will get practical exposure to creating engineering drawings and plans using AutoCAD, enhancing their technical proficiency and design accuracy essential for real-world applications in civil, mechanical, and architectural fields.

The Expert Talk on Emerging Trends in Water & Wastewater Treatment aimed to enlighten students on the latest technologies and innovations in the field of environmental engineering. Delivered by Dr. Arun Kumar S, Associate Professor in Civil Engineering, the session focused on sustainable treatment methods, smart water management solutions, and modern practices in wastewater recycling. This insightful session helped students understand real-world challenges and future prospects in water resource management.
 

The Department of Civil Engineering, in association with the Training and Placement Department of  St.Thomas College of Engineering & Technology, organized a Workshop on Skill Development in collaboration with Carbon Blue Global. Held on 10th July 2024, the workshop featured industry experts Mr. Jubair K V (Managing Director, Carbon Blue Global), Mr. Noufal P P (Quantity Surveyor), and Mr. Anwer C M (Ex-Amazon, IIM Lucknow). The session aimed to enhance the employability and industry readiness of Civil Engineering students from the 2020 and 2021 batches by focusing on essential technical and soft skills.

The One-Day Training Programme on Road Safety was conducted to raise awareness and educate participants on critical aspects of traffic regulations, accident prevention, and safe driving practices. The session included discussions on common causes of road accidents, safety measures, traffic signage, and the role of civil engineers in designing safer roads. Interactive activities and expert insights helped reinforce the importance of responsible behavior and infrastructure planning for road safety.

This workshop is designed to provide hands-on training and practical knowledge on the use of Total Station, a modern surveying instrument widely used in construction and civil engineering. Participants will learn about instrument setup, data collection, coordinate measurement, and contour mapping. The session aims to enhance field skills, accuracy in surveying, and understanding of real-time data processing for topographic and layout works.

This workshop offers an introduction to AutoCAD, the industry-standard software for 2D drafting and 3D modeling in engineering and architecture. Participants will gain hands-on experience with the AutoCAD interface, learn essential drawing and editing commands, create accurate technical drawings, and explore layer management, dimensioning, and plotting. By the end of the session, attendees will be equipped to produce professional-quality plans and designs.

The expert talk on “Soil-Structure Interaction” focused on the complex relationship between structural systems and the supporting soil beneath them. The session provided in-depth insights into how soil properties influence the behavior of structures and how structural loads, in turn, affect soil response. The expert emphasized the importance of considering this interaction in design and analysis to ensure safety, durability, and performance of foundations and superstructures.

The Workshop on Mix Design as per IS Specifications was organized to provide participants with practical knowledge and hands-on experience in designing concrete mixes following Indian Standard codes. The session covered key topics such as material selection, water-cement ratio, workability, and target strength calculations. Through guided demonstrations and problem-solving exercises, participants gained a thorough understanding of designing durable and cost-effective concrete mixes suitable for various construction requirements.

The Workshop on Total Station was a hands-on training program designed to equip students with practical skills in advanced surveying techniques using Total Station instruments. The workshop covered fundamental concepts, instrument setup, data collection, and error reduction methods. Participants gained experience in field measurements, coordinate calculations, and map preparation, enhancing their competence in modern geospatial practices essential for civil engineering applications.

The expert talk on “Stability of Soil” was an insightful technical session aimed at enhancing students' understanding of geotechnical concepts related to soil behavior under various loading conditions. The session focused on the principles of slope stability, soil shear strength, types of soil failures, and modern analysis techniques. Delivered by an experienced expert in geotechnical engineering, the program provided valuable real-world applications and case studies to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical challenges in civil engineering.

The expert talk on “Essential Requirements & Properties of High Performance Concrete” was organized to deepen participants’ understanding of advanced concrete technology. The session highlighted the key characteristics that define high performance concrete (HPC), such as high strength, durability, workability, and sustainability. The expert discussed the selection of materials, mix design principles, and performance criteria essential for achieving HPC, along with practical applications in modern construction projects.
